Hello all my ground pounding brothers and sisters. Let me introduce myself. My name is Josh and I am a disabled veteran and a single father. Since I can’t work, and my son is in school all day…. I can do one of two things. I can sit at home (which is very tempting), or I can get off my 265 lbs butt and hit some trails. I guess I will kick up some dust.
While researching local trails in Central Florida, I found out about the Florida State Forests Trailwalker Program. It is pretty cool if you haven’t heard about it before, because it gives you something to work (or walk) towards. A Patch! Several patches actually. The first is the Trailwalker Patch. You complete at least 10 trails in a minimum of 5 state Forests (there is a list of qualifying trails under the “Getting Started” 1. tab @ http://www.freshfromflorida.com/Divisions-Offices/Florida-Forest-Service/Recreation/Hiking ). Once you complete 10 in 5 Forests, you get this patch!
You grab a self-addressed, no postage necessary post card at the beginning of the trail, fill it out and send it in. They will send you a sticker to put on a Trailwalkers Log ( found at the same link above under “Getting Started” 2. tab.
After you complete more hikes (explained on their site) you get the TrailBlazer then the TrailMaster
Eventually your patch will look like this!
How awesome is that. Being a Marine Corps Veteran… I love my patches. My day pack is covered with them. So the thought of doing something I love anyways and getting rewarded for it sounds pretty awesome to me. So that is what this blog is about. I’ll be posting about which trails I hike and information about the trail that might help out others. So stay tuned… and I’ll post about the trails upon completion.
